      Cornell is a nice place to be a grad student

      Pros

      Overall Cornell is a pretty good place to be a grad student, although of course your experience will heavily depend on your research group and your advisor. WIthin Engineering, most of the faculty are top notch and really know their stuff, and quite a few are literally the world leaders in their fields. Ithaca is a cool little funky town to be in for a few years, with lots of outdoorsy things to do and many good restaurants. The winter is pretty long and cold, but that helps you focus on your work. Also, go watch a hockey game while you're here.

      Cons

      Cornell's administration is known for "Big Red Tape." If you have an administrative problem it can take several trips to several different offices around campus to get things figured out. Also there is not much in terms of campus housing for grad students, so most live off campus.

      Pros

      Great benefits, good salary for academia, nice progressive small city (Ithaca) that is really beautiful 6 months out of the year. Superior opportunities to further one's education through the Employee Degree program. Surrounded by a vibrant university community and generally smart, decent people who believe in the institution's mission.

      Cons

      The pace of change can be glacial in most units. Opportunities for advancement to senior level positions and institutional control are limited for non-academics. Ithaca winters are long and gray. Lots of politics. State supported "contract colleges" are not immune to economic downturns and downsizing.

      Fun way to get through college

      Pros

      Working here is a lot of fun. The people are great to work with and are always striving to be their best. It's an absolutely beautiful area to be in, especially if you like nature and the outdoors.

      Cons

      It is a big place, so you don't really get to meet too many people. The weather is cold most of the year and is in general not the best (though if you like the cold, it's not really a big problem). Ithaca is kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but luckily Cornell has enough stuff going on around it that it's not so bad.
