Pros

This is a great school in that it teaches you alot about not only your major but working in general. I'm not just talking about career services, either. Through the academic program you will learn to work your ass off like no other, and with your friends by your side you may even enjoy it.

Cons

The problem, however,is the people here are quite vacuous. Everyone tries to game the system (no academic brilliance is found here) and no one forms true friendships or relationships. This is because Cornell, in my opinion, overworks its students, and the people here are all academic climbers and care more about stepping on each other on their way to the top than wasting their precious time on forming real relationships with one another.

Pros

Lots of smart people...the undergrads can be a handful sometimes, though. The benefits package is good - it's surprisingly nice to be able to have most of one's health needs handled at the school's clinic on campus. During the summer, Ithaca is absolutely spectacular.

Cons

Bureaucracy can be enraging; to much organizational inertia for things to change very quickly. I imagine there is significant variation in the way graduate students are treated across departments, but I have not heard anything specific. Winter here can definitely get old - I am from a southern state, so it took a season to learn how to deal with it. However, I almost like it now.

Pros

Speaking as a graduate student I can say that Cornell is a place with very knowledgeable and respected professors. While the interactions between advisers and students greatly depends on the professor style of work (some work shoulder to shoulder with their students, and others rarely visiting the laboratories) it is easy to meet and discuss problems with faculty that are not directly connected with your research. This is due to the policy of "Open doors" that Cornell encourages. The interactions between different departments are quite fluent and the sharing of ideas is considerably facilitated. In general the staff is very supportive towards the students and helps overcome problems outside the academics.

Cons

Considerable workload given to the graduate students.
