Pros

Good compensation. Smart and hard-working colleagues, who really do care about the mission and work they do. Mature hardware and strategy. Ambitious goals. Safety and test oriented mindset. Strong focus.

Cons

Autocratic. Obsessed with monitoring employees. Zero focus research or long term technical ideation. Career advancement impossible without poor WLB. Tech debt reduction goes unrewarded. Over-indexed on ML. Expected value of RSUs low due to GM control.

Pros

Benefits wise, you can't find better anywhere else outside of FAANG. I am a remote worker outside of California. - Unlimited PTO (if you actually assert this, I take 5-6 weeks off outside of 1 week company shutdown at Christmas, guaranteed 1 day off per month (holiday or Cruise-created holiday etc) - Flexible work policy: For me in software, this means I am fully remote by choice, not required to come into the office. Though I do like to go once in a while, they even pay for your whole trip to SF/SEA office if you team does a meet up once per quarter. Teams also seem to be very flexible with working from other timezones. You don't (necessarily) need to work from PT - many teams encourage working local time elsewhere such that there can be more around the clock coverage. I think that's pretty cool. (team specific) -Private company but quarterly liquidity your RSUs with no sell cap. GM will buy the stock like it's the open market as soon as it vests. Insane. -Best compensation in the industry. Depending on level, you target 20, 30, or 40% of your annual salary as a bonus. -Monthly stipends for "wellness", commuter, cell phone bill, WFH setups etc -100% 401k match up to $9000 -Great growth potential as there are lots of places for ownership as well as a mentor program. -Company is quite transparent overall for one of its size

Cons

- I'm sure you've seen others mention this, but you need to have a strong understanding/grasp on how to assert your work/life balance. I believe vast majority of the time people seem to feel they have no choice in the matter. I think this is wrong; You need to set boundaries and speak up when you will need help/won't be able to meet the deadline (that doesn't require working 60+hrs). I have not had a problem with this - some weeks are busier than others where urgent tasks require me to either work long days or hop on at 9-10pm to finish a task. Other weeks I self-compensate by signing off at 3 or 4pm. Just don't be spineless and you'll be fine. -Related to the above, but the general culture could be improved. As a remote worker (well, my whole team of ~40 are technically remote since they don't regularly go into an office, though living in the Bay Area) it can be hard to "meet people outside of work". I've had jobs where we will have long casual calls with people and really get to know each other. I feel at Cruise it is a bit more "ok are we done here? I've got stuff to do". It's not actively bad, but was definitely different than what I was used to. -Very aggressive company goals that frequently make me "feel behind", but I've had to let that one go and just focus on what I can do.
