Pros

Cummins has a very advanced goal tree and work plan system. They work hard to align these with the corporate strategy. These offer what I would feel is a great backbone to the development of successful project plans, which in turn 1) help the company direction, 2) offer cohesive continuous improvement, and 3) provide a solid road map for individual successes.

Cons

A key shortcoming of working at Cummins is having to live with the hardline, insensitive approach the top management has taken with regard to workforce reduction. Cummins just completed two back to back record setting quarters, and yet the position is now that they must cut ten percent of the professional workforce in order t meet their goals. That makes it very difficult to feel comfortable in a workplace setting.

Pros

Two things - people and potential. The people who work at Cummins are some of the greatest folks that you'll ever meet. They (highly) value their personal time - including time with their family and friends - and they treat work as important but not THE most important thing in their lives. The potential for this company is huge - not only from a financial growth perspective but also from a process improvement perspective. When given the opportunity and management buy-in to improve something, the results are awe-inspiring.

Cons

IT is backwards. Much of the work is outsourced to vendors who can't code, can't speak English, and have no understanding of the fundamentals of end to end programming. In addition, there is an internal shared services group for infrastructure which cares more about how to eak money out of the business then in actually delivering and sustaining systems. Personnel doesn't have their act together either. There's a lack of coordination for bringing on new people. It's like once they are hired, people forget that they need the basics to do their job. Six sigma is something that many folks are supposed to do but in many cases, it's not true to what the discipline is. While there are ways to improve things through a six sigma process, not everything fits into that structure yet, if it is labeled potentially cost saving, it will be shoved into that structure.

Pros

Cummins does a great job of communicating changes and direction to all employees. They especially do a good job of communicating expectations, metrics and how the company performs according to those metrics. The company also does a good job of making employees understand how they negatively or positively affect those metrics. Employees are treated with respect, and I find that upper management requests and values feedback from employees. One of the missions of Cummins Parts and Service is to make it a great place to work. It is truly a great place to work. The work environment, the equipment, and (especially) people make it worth while. Cummins is also very flexible and understanding (from my experience) when you have matters outside of work to take care of.

Cons

Although the company does a great job of communicating metrics to the employees and how each employee or role can influence those metrics , sometimes it is difficult to accept that one really has a say so in the "big picture". While Cummins is a great company to work, compensation for similar work in other organizations is much higher. It is known, internally, that Cummins is not the best paying place to work, but many of the benefits (great place to work/flexibility) sometimes make it harder to leave .
