Pros

-Subsidized ORCA card -Good health insurance -Caseworkers and on the ground staff are absolutely wonderful and committed to DESC's mission -Opportunities to cross train

Cons

-Management is fine sweeping issues under the rug even if they're safety issues and ethical issues -You will go unheard if you reach out to management repeatedly about concerns -Management flips the script on whistleblowers and retaliates -Management would rather protect an age protected class versus trans individuals reporting safety issues/different set of work expectations -Management in my experience did not offer resources or offer to connect me to HR when I had been asking for support from my supervisor for months -Management did not provide resources when after months of me asking for support (a coworker in an age protected class then went on to attempt to get physical with me) nor did they connect me to HR or check in with me at all -Management will make you out to be the problem after their months of neglecting serious issues at hand begin to fester -Completely different set of expectations for trans/non cis male workers versus expectations for cis males at least in my experience/department -Will not collaborate with staff when it comes to serious concerns and issues

Pros

Working with the clients is fulfilling and interesting, and the agency's philosophical approach to serving vulnerable populations is going in the right direction. If you get into a good program with a good supervisor and staff, you can learn a lot, and there's a lot of room to develop your own style of practice. DESC can provide you with invaluable work experience when it comes to serving people with who have histories of homelessness and co-occurring disorders.

Cons

Upper management appears to have formed its own inner circle and does not care about input from employees who actually work with the agency's clients. Consequently, upper management is detached from both their clients and their employees. Salary and benefits are low relative to the amazing work that staff do. High turnover rates result, making work even more difficult for staff who does remain. Employees are also provided with negligible training to deal with exceptionally difficult clients and working conditions, meaning you learn as you go, for better and worse.
