A giant mess

Pros

-good part time job - flexible hours and schedules - employee discount program acceptable - coworkers generally pleasant

Cons

- management that makes it very apparent the only thing they are concerned with is bottom line - incredibly high turnover rate - miscommunication between management and staff lead to scheduling disasters - payroll cuts from higher management frequently make store incredibly understaffed. Staff is then asked to "do the impossible" with no time to do it - no room for internal advancement

LOW MORALE

Pros

Proa- they are really hard to come by. They have a standard benefit package (medical and dental is good). SM get stock, but they can't touch it for 3 yrs. bonus

Cons

stores run a low payrolls-managers have to boot strap projects all of the time. culture of company is thankless at the store level from DM>>>RVP>>>VP. no one is vested in your development. We have highly skilled mgrs in role for 5-7 years, but they keep being passed up for DM rolls, because the company keeps recruiting from Sears/Kmart. Work/Life balance is a mess. One weekend off a month. You are paid based on a 50 hour work week. most week are 6 days without comp time. high turnover of mgrs, associates, leads

Demanding Part-time Retail Work

Business Outlook

Pros

Work with things that you love, meet to people who have similar interest. You get good employees’ discounts.

Cons

High turnover due to the low tech operations, erratic and conflicting scheduling (even after clearly stating availability), expectation or pressure for associates to do more than what they are hired for. For examples: doing the work of two or more associates for extended periods of time (4 to 8 hours); irregular breaks/lunch (5 to 6 hours for a break, lunch, or both) for the same previous reason, you are the only person covering that department; providing operations support ((offloading trucks, work in the warehouse)), housekeeping other departments and the restrooms; working beyond the scheduled hours (some managers won’t allow employees to leave after closing until all, not just you, employees finish their close-out tasks). This could be a learning or motivating experience for some people but not for most (like teachers, coaches, etc, that are supplementing their income).
