No career growth opportunities

Pros

It's more stable than working in automotive.

Cons

They secretly block you from career growth opportunities. They will make it look legit by letting you do interviews, but they will secretly block you from any offers. The ones who move up in the company are connected with the right people and get fast tracked, everyone else not so much. Real shame they screw people over like this.

Pros

DTE is a great company for people seeking good training, secure employment, acceptable+ salary/raises for the area, and modest/long-term career prospects. It is a safe and stable company to work for, although individual work/life balance is heavily dependent upon where/who you work for.

Cons

Career advancement and salary increases can be a point of frustration. HR policies are restrictive and conservatively applied for the majority of people (common in regulated companies). Vague segmentation of work across the enterprise & a culture of "top-down leadership" tends to result in unnecessarily slow progress, low accountability at the mid-to-executive leadership level, and self-inflicted failures.

Pros

Job security is good. The work in certain groups is very interesting and engaging but not in all groups. There are pockets of absolutely excellent supervisors/coworkers which make for a great career experience if you happen to be in those groups. The company consistently broadcasts good values and DEI.

Cons

Recently it feels like executive management has stopped caring about the employees at all and the shareholders are obviously king. It has not always felt like this but it’s not fun right now. No base pay raises this year despite inflation (read: we all got massive effective paycuts) and virtually no hiring (though they love to market that “some hiring is approved!” HA) even though many groups are cripplingly understaffed as it is and the engineering workload on the electric side is projected to substantially increase because we can only afford to work 100% capital projects right now. More work without more people or pay, more more more more more until you’re burnt to a crisp. You gotta watch out for your own burnout here. Work life balance is impossible (see: understaffed) so you better love what you do otherwise there’s literally no reason to stick around especially because other utilities in the area will pay better with better benefits and better work life balance.
