Pros

Dataminr has both great people and an interesting and powerful product, and the company does its best to take care of its employees. This combination makes it a pleasure to come to work every day. The product and datasets you get to work with every day are fascinating. Because you're dealing with breaking news, you're able to stay on top of current events and see tons of interesting material just by doing your work. More importantly, the delivery of this data to our numerous clients is truly making a positive impact on the world. It's easier to perform at work when you believe in what the results are. As great as the product is, the people are even better. I interact with nearly every team, and everyone working here is intelligent, kind, and humble. Everyone puts the end results ahead of their own egos, which leads to a lot of collaboration and willingness to help others when they're facing issues. The managers are also very strong in their fields and give their employees the opportunity and assistance they need to succeed. Even on days in which the work isn't overly exciting (though there are very few of those), it's still great to come into the office and spend time with the people. Dataminr also provides plenty of benefits to make life easier. It's not on the scale of some of the tech giants, but the lunches and selection of snacks are more than adequate. The company does its best to bring everyone together for happy hours and special events, and the sports leagues and game nights are good opportunities to hang out after work. Overall, I couldn't be happier at Dataminr. I've worked with a great product and better people, and I've been able to learn a ton along the way.

Cons

Because the demand for Dataminr is so high in a number of diverse spaces, the team is growing rapidly in a number of directions, leading to the occasional last-minute pushbacks and release holds.

Pros

(I wrote this because a prospective employee contacted me wanting to learn more about the company, so I thought I'd share it publicly) I've been working at Dataminr for over a year and I'm very much enjoying it. The backend engineering team is about 20 people, all of them are great to work with. Being a smaller team, I feel like I’ve been able to have a huge impact on the company (~200 employees currently I think). Also the new ideas are always piling up, so there’s a variety of challenges to address. For engineers, the organizational structure is very flat; half of us report to the CTO and half report to the Chief Data Scientist. We’re also grouped into SCRUM teams. We have a team lead and a product manager, but design is up to me and most of my work is self-directed anyway.* I’ll be honest about the state of the engineering: older parts can be pretty bad. Every company has this to some degree I’m sure. Fortunately, I’ve been given free reign to redesign and rewrite things as I see fit. I feel very trusted that I’m writing and testing my code correctly, and I’m able to bring in useful tools to do that with. This has significantly improved the reliability of critical services. After all, if I release bad code, clients who are making serious decisions based on our output will be impacted! That gets at another part of the satisfaction of working here: Dataminr literally saves lives. Though few know it, we have a significant impact on the world because so many major news organizations are using Dataminr to find breaking news. As far as company culture, it’s great. We have happy hours and various themed parties. We regularly have company sports teams playing soccer, kickball, softball, etc, if that’s your thing. It is an open office layout, for better or for worse. We have lunch provided every day as well as a kitchen that’s always well stocked with snacks and food, which means there’s always lots of interaction going on there. I’m friends with a lot of my coworkers and regularly hang out with folks from work outside of the office. tldr: yup, definitely recommend working here *-I actually checked our ticket tracker and over 3/4s of my tickets were ones I created myself.

Cons

Once they ran out of my favorite flavor of protein bar (cookies and cream quest bar) and I had to eat a strawberry one that day instead

Pros

At Dataminr, I'm challenged daily, I feel good about the work I do, and I'm able to maintain a healthy work-life balance. From the beginning, I've enjoyed working with smart people on a product I believe is making a global impact. As the company has grown it's only gotten better with more impressive talent and a more engaged culture. The free lunch every day is an added bonus :)

Cons

There's not a clear path for professional growth

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience here! Feeling challenged every day, feeling good about the impact your work is having around the world, and being able to maintain a healthy work-life balance are three of the most important attributes we hear from candidates, and three areas that I also hold as critical reasons why I personally love my career at Dataminr! I could talk about career paths and growth all day because I feel so passionate about it so I’ll give you a short answer here, but would be happy to grab a coffee and talk more with you anytime! We have spent a lot of time over the past year working to define clear paths for growth within departments and to provide exposure to paths across departments as well. Some of your colleagues have found new opportunities through the mentor program, many of them have attended our quarterly lunch and learns to hear about the amazing work being done across the company, and many more have taken advantage of our individual professional development fund to upskill themselves in critical areas needed for their next step. Sometimes in a smaller, entrepreneurial culture like ours, the best next step is not as obvious because we don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach or career ladder. Let’s talk and figure out the best way to craft your personalized next step!
