Pros

I worked for/with a pair of IT VP's that I respected, and who respected me. Soon after I left, both VP's in IT left the company. SO GLAD I got out when I did.

Cons

I'd been lucky enough to work for companies with an awesome culture. I didn't even think to assess Merrill's culture when I joined as an IT Director. My bad. The culture was very tribal, with a clear lack of communication at the Sr leadership level, and very often a complete lack of respect. Rather than work with IT, the business created a shadow-IT organization and worked to undermine formal IT. I knew 6 months in that I needed to get out, but it took me 18 months to make the transition. I learned my lesson and found a GOOD company with a GOOD culture, or at least one that better matched my values. While there are some who are very happy at Merrill, I'd recommend against an IT career there unless they've cleaned shop in the business area. (very doubtful)

Lousy management resulting in lousy company

Pros

Can't think of any pros.

Cons

Merrill hasn't given out raises in over 10 years. The only people rewarded are top management & a handful of top sales people. Absolutely no communication from management - I only heard from my manager twice in the last 3 years. In the last few years, it has become abundantly clear that current management is motivated be personal greed. They started with necessary staff reductions & sales of departments that made no sense to keep but has evolved to random reductions & closures without any long-term thinking. Their motivation to meet their annual goals in order to receive their beloved bonuses has actually led them to shut down facilities that were still very much needed. So after the cost of shutting those facilities down, they had to re-open them which cost them a great deal more. Very stupid. I believe their plan is to keep strangling the business until they can sell the one department that has been the most successful and walk away with a large chunk of change. They won't be around too many more years.

Pros

- Nice colleagues. Not much else.

Cons

- Management is a complete joke. They don't really care about employees nor are they smart/hardworking/organized enough to come up with plans that take the company to the next level. Merrill will always remind a VDR vendor and nothing more. - Most leaderships are extremely unorganized. People in power seem to making very important decisions without being held accountable for whatever they do. - No career growth at this company whatsoever. - Pay below market rate. - Gloomy company culture and office environment.
