Pros

Tuition benefits! Once you get your degree get out of there.

Cons

Little room for advancement Condescending attitude towards employees. They (management) are the parent you are the child trying to get away with something. Bend over backwards for students, but don’t care about employees. Employees WARNED that if they (management) received even 1 student complaint about not being able to receive services because of remote work, they would pull the plug on that option … because students never lie, but the employees do.

Pros

The mission of DePaul is worthy and noble: to be part of positive change in the world and to help those on the margins. It's a wonderful mission and the faculty and students are doing amazing things. Unfortunately, this doesn't extend to the atmosphere for staff.

Cons

Where to begin? First, they pay well below any kind of competitive rate except for the fundraisers who are valued above all else. The rest of the staff are paid terribly and there are no raises or a chance for a promotion...EVER! They do give cost of living increases but these are piddly and even these are sometimes withheld. Then there is the environment, which is rigid and controlling and toxic with bullying bosses, no accountability and a culture of fear. Managers also do not ever give positive feedback. There is a huge disconnect between the mission of the university and how staff are treated and compensated. If you read the website, it's full of lies about how they value their staff and pay them competitive wages, etc. There is a huge turnover rate and it's not random. It's because of the culture and the way staff are treated. They don't care. People are disposable and dispensible to them. They would rather just hire someone else at very little money than bother to nurture and treat their current employees the way they deserve to be treated.

Pros

One of the best parts about working full-time at DePaul is the fringe benefits: 401k match up to 8%, fully vested; BCBS PPO health insurance option that includes Northwestern University Hospital system; 3 weeks vacation plus 1 week during the end-of-year holidays (for staff). Unlimited sick time, but you have to enroll in short-term disability if you exceed five consecutive days. Another pro is the students. Many come from challenging environments and are determined to succeed in school. Most genuinely seem supportive of one another--I've seen a lot of kindness displayed in the classrooms and halls of DePaul. There are some faculty all-stars here, both in terms of publishing and in teaching, but many have, after achieving tenure, withdraw from an active scholarly life and are perfectly happy maintaining the status quo (though this is not uncommon in academia). On the staff side, I've met a number of extremely talented individuals as well as a handful of clueless types. Some positions are overworked and under-managed, others remain under-utilized and redundant. This seems to be more of a symptom of poor management than anything else.

Cons

Low salaries compared to other similar institutions, both for staff and faculty; however, university administrators are paid more on average. Declines in enrollment, especially in graduate degree programs such as law and adult education (SNL), have resulted in both salary and hiring freezes. While health insurance premiums have remained stable in the past couple years, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, and co-pays are increasing in the next year (at least for the more expensive PPO plan). Little room for advancement unless you hold a terminal degree.
