Pros

the people. deloitte offers a wonderful work culture that i would find challenging to replicate. even amidst the challenges facing the company in the fall out of the 2008 / 2009 economic climate, the firm keeps its focus. this is being said even though I was let go during the fall 2008 "headcount realignment" (layoffs) process.

Cons

bureaucracy. deloitte is large, thus burdened by somewhat rigid procedures. i worked for a small group within Consulting whose daily buisiness is wholly different than the remaining majority of the firm. yet performance metrics, for example, were measured the same in many regards that were arguably unfair. quantitative performance metrics were extremely aggressive, and in some ways impossible. this left a good portion of performance reviews subject to qualitative metrics which are of course fuzzy and more challenging to affirm during firm restructures, for example.

Pros

Great place to start working in the consulting industry. A very good brand name to have on your resume. It does help in many of your future opportunities. A very diversified practice that provides you with many opportunities to grow and learn outside of your area of focus or expertise. Additionally, the large gamut of services provided by the firm help you if you in difficult financial times especially if you know the right people and can position yourself successfully. Partners seem to be reasonably intelligent people who can offer you leadership to look forward to and emulate. The consulting practice is well respected in the market place and is a great learning ground to understand the modus operandi of the consulting world.

Cons

Very large practice, so you do get typecast in your area. It takes a lot of effort and networking (almost like joining a new firm) to be able to switch industries or practices. The compensation and promotion processes are not the best and do not necessarily reward merit equally. The raises especially during promotion years are very sub par. I did realise I was being grossly underpayed. Financial services practice in consulting does not have a large variety of banking and capital markets projects - so if you want to be involved in trade processing projects or strategic for BCM operations, you may not get many good work assignements. The flipside is that the retail banking and insurance side is very mature and you do get some good projects in that arena. Lots of travel does get tiresome after a bit.
