Pros

Different corrosion control environment, most of the time it is oil & gas, the water side is kind of a nice area to work in.

Cons

Some of the management do not understand corrosion control. Water will flow without cathodic protection, but we can make the "out of site out of mind" infrastructure, last a lot longer with small upfront cost.

Pros

Job stability is like nothing in the private sector. Wages are on the low end of market, but salary increases are steady and predictable. Tremendous range of technologies to gain experience in, if you are in IT. Flexible work hours and telecommuting are big focuses, even if telecommuting is somewhat frowned upon if you dare use it.

Cons

Dis-respectful co-workers - example, meetings get cancelled, and the organizer doesn't bother cancelling, or even turning up. So much for the giant "respect" banner hanging up in the cafeteria. Takes approximately a year to get any IT projects done. Virtually no disciplinary action for employees who screw up, they just shrug and carry on, no matter what the foul up is - including with paychecks. Unhelpful staff with tribal knowledge. Health care insurance requires you to haggle to get treatment, otherwise it's denied, almost by default. Vacation accrues at a snails pace, and managers have no discretion over it. If you haven't accrued it, you can't take it. Noticeable entitlement mentality, people who simply don't deliver, or even try, think they are top dog based on longevity. Massive application sprawl means that trying to follow process means multiple, incompatible applications required, for no apparent reason. Also leads to amazing amounts of downtime. Weak or no leadership present. Silos and turf wars that show that there is not much unity.

Worked in I.T. for more than 10 years

Pros

Steady job, decent pay, good technologies.

Cons

No leadership, outdated mentality. The lack of leadership is actually incredible, especially for an I.T. organization. It's basically run as though all of the I.T. employees should be button-pushers that sit at their desk for a minimum of 45 hours during the week. There is no compensation whatsoever for working evenings, weekends, holidays, etc. No comp time, no pay, no kudos, nothing. The pay-for-performance program is a joke because each department's manager has a quota of different reviews to meet, so it's not fair across the board. Even if you meet all of your goals and objectives, even going above and beyond, you're still required to sit at your desk for 45 hours a week, even with extra evening and weekend hours. If you want to work here, it's expected that you'll sit around and chat with other employees for several hours per day instead of being productive. Efficient time usage is not promoted or desired whatsoever, just put in the hours and wait until you die or retire.
