Pros

Soft money faculty position allows one to spend vastly more than full time equivalent to get funding, execute grants, publish etc

Cons

Admin is decoupled from Faculty entirely. There is no feedback mechanism there at all. Overhead rate is higher than peer institutions. Junior faculty receive almost no training whatsoever.

Pros

As a research professor, you have a very flexible schedule, and enjoy lots of academic freedom. The work environment is great, with nice offices and good staff support.

Cons

This is a soft money research institute, and as a result it can be difficult if funding is scarce.
