Poor Company Culture

Pros

• Most DL employees are super open, fun, and collaborative. • Flexible with working from home/remotely

Cons

• Detroit Labs' company culture is extremely strange and toxic. The company functions as a Holacracy (look it up), with an extremely flat org structure. There is functionally no management except for the company founders, and they are utterly uninterested in improving the day-to-day of the company. • Compensation is poor, as are benefits.

Pros

Thoughtful and creative engineering team on the services side of the company. Very good health insurance due to being an FOC company.

Cons

Sales team can’t close deals and haven’t been able to do it for several years. Leadership just threw more money at the ineffective sales team. Leadership has big ideas on strategic vision, but they are lacking completely in tactical skill.

Pros

- Some of the most empathetic and intelligent humans in Detroit hang their hat at Detroit Labs. This is because of its storied past, not the current state of the company. - Genuine opportunities for juniors and mid level developers to hone their craft.

Cons

- Complete lack of sales - Lack of recent innovation, previously Detroit Labs was actively working on frameworks and open source projects. - Extremely difficult to get promoted from within. When I was denied an internal promotion, the conversation made me feel small and irrelevant. I had been working my tail off for 2+ years and it felt like nobody in leadership noticed.
