Crumbling from within

Pros

None. This was hell on earth.

Cons

There is a distinct lack of responsibility within the company. No one wants to take ownership, and I found that many people were confused about what they should be doing. People join and leave too quickly and no history of why is properly documented and no handoff of who is taking this over is captured (if anyone is even taking over). Additionally, the culture was abysmal. There is very little diversity. Resources are sparse. Better hold on to that pen they gave you the first day, because it's probably the only one you'll get. Hope you have your own hardware that is pared down enough to work with DB's sad tech.

Pros

Good employee resource groups, especially for LGBTQ and women employees.

Cons

There are many lifers, or long term employees, in the Global Markets division. The sales and trading program for incoming graduates cultivated a culture where people didn’t take 100% responsibility, they learned they couldn’t speak authentically and they didn’t need to keep to agreements. They have only known a firm where withholding truth and manipulating what you say to manage outcomes is the norm. They don’t know how great working life can be at a different firm or even a different industry.

Pros

Coworkers and local managers are wonderful and supportive (ignoring the location head who has since left) Great work/life balance, especially for new parents Amazing 401(k) program and match Development environments are slowly becoming better in most ways. Decent compensation for the area.

Cons

Generally awful vendors for supporting technology infrastructure. Inflexible black boxed promotion process. Many projects that struggle with technical debt and lack buy-in from the business to fix these issues. Still cannot access the public Bitbucket website internally. No incentive to truly reward high performers in junior and mid-level positions, as compensation is tied to overall bank performance for those roles. Occasionally you may be able to get a (<10%) bonus on top of that. Truly abysmal stock purchase plan: extraordinarily high fees (It cost me 7% of my balance to sell), very low match, high minimum investment relative to stock price. Upper management and compliance make a lot of talk about money laundering and regulations with no visibility into why the bank is still hiring corrupt individuals. It is frustrating being told to not do X, Y, and Z and continually seeing headlines about people doing those exact, obvious things.
