Pros
I loved the focus on People at DeveloperTown. When you think of a consulting company, the image that comes to mind is one that works it's own people to the bone. Leadership at DeveloperTown was always 100% focused on taking care of our people, and helping work to fit into life and not at the expense of life. I'll put it this way: my _wife_ loved my time there. :) It's a really creative space. The physical space of DeveloperTown was a joy to come to each day. I haven't worked there for over a year now, and co-incidentally just yesterday my kids said "Daddy, we miss your job. At that place with the little houses. We missed coming to work with you sometimes, and we missed the parties they would have for us." DeveloperTown was great at celebrating events with all of us and our families. The work was usually interesting. DeveloperTown always worked with unique clients -- I went to work there because of the leadership and because of my desire to help people "start new things". This looked different over time, but because the core was "starting something" there was always something special and interesting about each project. Ownership. DeveloperTown cares a LOT about ownership, and worked hard to provide opportunities to take ownership, and more than just a "care about what you do" kind of way. This was very encouraging.
Cons
Remote life was difficult. I wasn't remote, but I worked with folks who were. I hope this has been improved since I left, but it's something we struggled with -- keeping remote folks as first-class citizens in the company. It's run by a partnership. This itself has it's pros and cons, though for me personally it was a con (meaning a negative, not a lie ;) ). There is no CEO setting a singular direction. There are a number of decisions made by a group of people. Perhaps this is only more visible at the leadership level, but I think it held us back sometimes, and other times it probably gave us an advantage. For myself, I want someONE to follow and be their biggest cheerleader. :) In a partnership where different folks have different priorities, they are forced to work that out, but I had trouble identifying with the results.
