Pros

Here are the few pros that Directive actually offers: Pro #1 - Grace. Grace is the unofficial official office mascot, the CEO's dog, who is the cutest and friendliest of big ol' fluffy puppies. She is literally their saving grace.
Pro #2 - Coworkers. Coworkers - excluding management - is the one reason I wanted to stay.
Pro #3 - Cold brew and snacks. Plenty of snacks in the kitchen. Cereal, chips, jerky. Just don't expect anything very healthy in the cabinets.
Pro #3.5 - Working remote after 6 months. I give this only a .5 because even though it's listed as a benefit, management won't allow you to do it all the time (read below for the "unlimited PTO" scam they tried to pull which only lasted for 4 months)... Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes. Be sure to read the fine print and speak with fellow employees when it comes to their "benefits".

Cons

They recently removed their "Unlimited PTO" benefit because - get this - people were taking vacations! WOW. The CEO said that they're changing it to a 3 week soft cap (WTF is that?! You can't put a "soft cap" on "UNLIMITED PTO". Stop acting like you care and just don't offer it!) He also announced that if you take 3 weeks every year it will and I QUOTE "it will look bad on you". 3 weeks of mental/physical vacay A YEAR will look bad on you, but you were just offering unlimited PTO?! Well, if that doesn't just say everything about management... but wait! There's more!
You're expected to overload yourself and work weekends. That's not an exaggeration. If you're good at your job they'll keep adding to your workload and say "You can handle it" - not out of support, but because they know they can. If you push back, be prepared to be lectured on the famous "if you want to grow in this company" speech.
The internal yearly reviews are a joke. Employees have complained about their workloads for over 2 years now and they still refuse to change the system. Your best employees are leaving because you're not listening to them. Don't you get it yet? Employees don't leave jobs, they leave leaders.
There is extremely obvious favoritism. Your employees are not stupid, we see everything and we all talk to one another. We know what's going on, who's not doing what, and who's taking credit for other people's work.
Verbally abusive one on one reviews. Management, I suggest you send your directors to management training because most of them have never managed anyone, let alone a whole team, and it shows. They need to understand that their title isn't "King/Queen". They're supposed to be leaders. Start acting as such.
Overall, my advice to anyone who is trying to get into the digital marketing space is to avoid Directive. If you want a work/life balance DEFINITELY avoid Directive at all costs. Don't be fooled by the pretty 5 star reviews that are filled with false claims of an "open door policy", only up to 5-6 accounts each, respect, vacation time, the option of working remotely, and great management. Understanding what goes on behind the curtain and knowing that the benefits listed and the 5-star reviews on this page are all written by management or were asked to be written by management -- is absolutely hilarious.

Directive Response

Hi there, this is Garrett, and this truly is me writing these responses. These reviews are never easy, but I truly wish you nothing but the best. I am confident you learned both good and bad things in your time here and that you will be even more prepared for what’s next in your career. My only wish is we could have spoken together as candidly as you have written. I also hope you can understand that the quality of co-workers here that has blessed both of our lives is a direct by-product of management. I hope you can see our heart one day and understand how much we value you. In closing, thank you for your feedback and I am excited to keep sprinting towards improving all aspects of working at Directive. - Garrett

Cons

Directive’s CEO and the marketing team loves to portray a false image of what Directive really is. All the positive reviews you’re reading are either written by employees who got asked to write a positive review by the CEO himself (or the marketing team) or it’s from recent hires who absolutely have no idea what they’re in for. Directive is an agency that preaches work-life-balance and a false sense of culture but here’s the simple truth: THERE IS NO WORK-LIFE-BALANCE HERE. You are constantly working longer than your 40hrs a week. You are constantly working on weekends. You are constantly stressed. Don’t believe the lies they’ll try to feed you. Employees are expected to do a consultant’s job while getting paid as a specialist. The only positive things to say are: The flexible work-hours (you can work from 7am-4pm, 8am-5pm, and 9am-6pm) and the ability to work remote. Anyway, if you’re kind enough to scroll down, you’ll find another negative review, where the CEO replies back spewing lies. This whole capacity model that Directive created is a joke. Don’t just throw in numbers and percentages to try to sound smart and manipulate your employees. We get it. You have a Masters. You created a capacity model without any contingency plan forgetting (or choosing not to) realize that certain accounts require more time than others. Instead, you boxed them all equally. The root problem with this company is the non-existent structure. Unfortunately, the CEO doesn’t (or refuses to) see how bad his employees are actually feeling. The people that don't see how big the structure issue is, are the ones that the CEO manipulated to believe that he really cares. If you really care CEO then why not listen to your employees? Don’t try to wiggle your way around their answers to YOUR questions. They are the ones working for you. Listen to them. At the end of the day, the Directors are also too scared to confront him about the true issues because the CEO wants PERFECT results at ALL cost. The Directors (especially one of them) does verbally bash your work on the one-on-one meetings that are suppose to be beneficial but instead your work if being called “stupid” and “dumb”. The lack of respect is REAL here. Also, because of the lack of structure, the unlimited-PTO is a laughable matter. You are expected to work ahead of time before taking your vacation. Truth is, you will REALLY have to work 80hrs one week in order to take one week off. The only employees who can actually benefit out of the unlimited-PTO without stressing beforehand are the Directors, Leads, and Account Managers. Because yes, this is a place where favoritism exists. Also, the whole mandatory blog post all employees need to write each quarter. Another laughable matter. Most of the blog posts written ended up being published on Directive’s site instead of the reputable publications the CEO mentioned. The compensation that started to take place not so long ago is only based off the approval of the post. So, there is no guarantee you’ll ever see that money. Also, if the blog posts are being published on Directive’s blog, how exactly does that help our careers? Only a handful (from the favorites) got published on MOZ, G2Crowd, and Semrush. At the end of the day, the main goal is to increase Directive’s organic traffic. No matter how much they make you feel like you can bring issues up, when you do, they understand and agree with you but they end up not changing anything. Why? Because the CEO is too eager to grow and get his business somewhere. At this point, just be honest. Either say you want to grow and it’ll cause structure issues and workload issues or don’t say anything at all. Be truthful and stop selling your lies in office hours. Long story short: To those curious about working here because their social media accounts look SO fun, please do yourself a favor and RUN. Don’t apply to this place if you care about work-life-balance, your health, and your mental state.

Directive Response

Hi there, this is Garrett the CEO here at Directive. Thank you for the feedback! I think it's important to clear the air on a couple of things: 1. The marketing team here is awesome and they do a great job of capturing the essence of Directive from the overwhelming majority of its staff. It’s really special to see how the team and company has grown over the last five years and they’ve done a phenomenal job. 2. I do not ask team members to leave a review personally as I find it to be very manipulative as well; however, a core function of Glassdoor’s platform is its ability to allow an employer (in their exact words) to “Request More Reviews”. It wouldn’t be right if people only got to hear your perspective and not the whole team’s views of our organization. I am very appreciative and proud that you recognized that you can bring issues up here and that you are heard. It speaks volumes of our directors and their ability to work with their team members. Unfortunately, we do not always make changes as quickly as we would like, but things can always be improved, and thoughtful feedback always helps. In closing, I know that your frustration comes from a good place and that we can learn from this. I am excited to keep getting better and I look forward to working together with our team and clients to further grow our mission and vision without sacrificing our values.
