Pros

There are a lot of great people that work for Discovery. The management team is really great. There is a level of transparency at all levels so that if you're interested in the way things work, you can find out. Discovery provides internal training opportunities, inside and outside your actual department and particular job. The Lifeworks department does a wonderful job in crafting programs to assist with work/life balance. Discovery is a place that I'm happy and proud to go to work for every day.

Cons

A series of re-orgs and restructuring over the past 2 years or so has made some of the organizational structure unstable or at least more fluid than I'm used to. It has made it challenging to work across teams at times, when team structures have changed a few times over the this time period. This isn't really a downside, it doesn't make life or work hard, it just makes it necessary to stay on top of everything that's going on, in and outside of your department.

Pros

It's immediately recognized and has a loyal following among viewers. Also, you get to see things that the general public is not privy too. It was alot of fun to see advance screenings of shows before they aired.

Cons

Too much favoritism and underserved advancement oportunities, especially towards young, good looking white women who don't have the experience or judgement to work in management positions. I felt they were not fair in offering opportunities for advancement for people who truly worked hard and deserved it. In my old deparment, the department head and his senior managers tended to show favoritism towards young, "hot" white women and promote them to positions that they were too young and inexperienced for. In nearly every case, these women would crash and burn and end up leaving. Those of us who were not as "hot" but who worked hard and did a did a good job were not rewarded with promotions.

Pros

Discovery has great brands that most people love. The work is often challenging and rewarding. Despite Discovery's strength, there are many areas that it needs to development, particularly in the digital space. This presents tons of opportunity for those who work hard and are good at what they do. Most people are relatively easy to work with, and there is very little office politics or drama.

Cons

Because the culture is less cut throat than other places, people remain in positions even if their performance is mediocre or poor. While I like the more laid back environment, I do think there needs to be more accountability. Zaslav has introduced a culture of accountability at the senior executive level, but it has just beginning to make its way to the rest of the ranks.
