While the people are lovely, the job is more difficult than it should be simply because Corporate doesn't allow for enough pay to attract/keep employees, enough hours to have employees on hand at one time, and things fall behind rapidly to save Big DG money. The Store Manager has another responsibility to travel to bail out other stores that are behind while the Assistant Manager takes the bulk of the responsibility at the store, which turns to that person being buried in a never ending cycle of impossible catch up that trickles down to everyone being in a cycle of never ending and impossible catch up. The staffing/understaffing issue that saves Corporate so much money leads to prices not being changed properly so customers believe they're being overcharged, and they are according to the price tag but really it hasn't been changed yet, and angry people plus a bad reputation. It also leads to lack of cleaning as much as should be done, empty shelves as 1 person can't keep up stocking while the other runs and watches register, a backroom that is overwhelming and probably not safe despite the very best efforts, and disarray. There is an inability to catch up because of the lack of staffing/understaffing. It is very stressful. Also, the fresh truck deliveries are inconsistent and the Assistant Manager often gets called in hours early to put it away, again because 1 person is there and it is not possible to run the register while putting away a delivery of frozen/refrigerated food at the same time. There have been times that the store has had to lock up to put away fresh truck because no one was available to come in hours before their shift or on their day off to put away fresh truck. The store Manager and Assistant Manager have the bulk of the responsibility of stocking, a keyholder has the other portion. If they were allotted more pay and hours to pass out, even more hours to make having someone come in to stock along with the Manager, Assistant Manager, or keyholder even a couple of days a week it would improve work stress and the condition of the store enormously but Corporate must make millions or take money from management. It is quite impossible. Overall, the job was still my favorite that I have had since I was a kid. The people are lovely, customers are friendly, and it is a nice environment other than the game of impossible catch up. I can't count how many times I have looked at the Assistant Manager and asked, "Are you ok????"
