Pros

You become aware of the bargains and products the stores sells. You have your regular customers that you get to know. Your schedule is flexible, your paycheck payout options are flexible (daily payout is available).

Cons

Hours tend to really fluctuate and you may need to seek additional employment, the DM’s don’t care if the weather is severe and the entire town is closed down- they expect the store to stay open even if your safety can be compromised (your manager will be written up for deciding to close ), no raises and low wages for store associates, stores stay understaffed causing long lines and unloaded products to stockpile in alot of stores.

Not Enough Hours or Pay

Pros

Chill, laid back coworkers and dress code.

Cons

Not enough hours at all. I started working at Dollar Tree about a month ago and have been given little to no hours. There was a problem with my schedule Immediately when I was hired to where I was left off the schedule for a week and a half without work. My current schedule is basically only working for 4-5 hour shifts 3 days a week, 12-15 hours a week with 6 days off in a row. That’s basically nothing. On top of that, if you’re going to work here be prepared to be the only cashier in the store most times. While you are the only cashier, they still expect you to stock shelves and it can get really busy sometimes for only one person. It’s also a lot of back-and-forth because just when you think you may have enough time to go put a couple boxes on the shelf, a customer shows up and you have to walk back to the register to cash them out. You need a manager for just about everything and half the time they’re nowhere to be found and you have to constantly keep calling them to the front and making customers wait. I’d only recommend this job if you want a small part time job for extra money, if you’re in school, or for a first time job for some experience.

Pros

Your staff will make or break you. Learned a lot of what NOT to do. Your stores success depends on the state of your stockroom.

Cons

By far, one of the WORST things about this company, is what they DO NOT tell you until you are hired in. Firstly, a typical work week is 40hrs, no? Maybe even 45…. But Dollar Tree functions on a 48 hr work week; yet expects management to be on schedule for 51hours total. If you do the math, on just those extra 8 hours; (from typical 40 to standard 48) it comes out to TWO extra months of free work. That’s 60 days. Beyond that, in Q4, you are expected to work 6days a week; (for a 6-8wks) and it’s not 51hrs/6days, they expect an additional work day, altogether! Now as management; this is all kind of stuff to be expected *could* potentially happen, however, Dollar Trees lack of transparency is insane. If you take a store manager position with the company; please keep the aforementioned mentioned hour requirements in mind when NEGOTIATING (that’s right, you should be negotiating!) your salary.
