Pros

There is a low stress, low expectation of employees in the basic sales-floor positions. They are one of the few companies who DOES NOT violate discrimination laws by requiring personality assessments or by asking disability-related or minority-related questions prior to employment.

Cons

Requires employees to know and agree to "company rules" but immediately requires employees to break those rules, daily. Corporate office regulates temperatures of stores and sets the temperature entirely too high to work comfortably in. The result is sweaty, unkempt, and irritable employees who are too hot to get as much work done as they could or would, otherwise. Company "only hires part time" now (15 to 20 hours per week, maximum) which appears to be their attempt at saving money and getting out of providing benefits and will result in disloyal and short-term employees. Pays minimum wage no matter what the experience or education level. Corporate controls decisions that should remain with store managers such as the number of employees needed each shift, merchandise/stock orders, hours per employee, pay for employees, etc.) Provides cheap materials for employees/customers such as flimsy plastic bags which employees are not supposed to double-up on, telephones that do not have "hold" buttons, which is so unprofessional, water fountains that produce luke-warm water that barely comes out of the spigot. Puts NO trust or faith in employees. Cashiers must call management to look at any bill over a twenty, any time there is a product void, any pricing discrepancy or missing tag, any exchange (they don't allow refunds at all), and many other tasks that any cashier should be able to do on their own. Corporate doesn't allow enough employees to keep the store neat and clean, customers served properly, registers covered, stock put out and kept in order in the back. Instead, they expect cashiers to do all the lower-end jobs and the managers to do all the upper-end jobs in addition to their actual jobs. This results in nothing being done very well. Employees are given only one, unpaid ten-minute break in a five-hour shift while most companies give a minimum of one, paid 15-minute break close to the middle four-hour period. Most companies also now recognize a person's need for liquid throughout the day, especially in hot environments, but DT does not allow their employees access to any drink (or even gum) during their shift. By the end of a shift at DT, your hair and clothes are soaked with sweat and your lips are dry and cracked from dehydration. With the lack of ANY care, concern, or consideration for its employees, it's like a third-world country work atmosphere!
