Pros

The work environment is one that promotes team building. The team I work with gets along very well and we enjoy working with each other. The opportunity to learn and grow as an engineer is always there and is encouraged by senior level management. The work hours are more 'flexible' than with many companies I have been employed with, and the benefits are above average. Dominion Enterprises Square is a new building, only being 2 years old, and the facilities here are exquisite. Every floor has either a Lounge and a Kitchen or two kitchens. Parking is paid for by the company until you have been here long enough to get a spot in the parking garage inside Dominion Enterprises Square. The parking garage here is 7 full floors of parking.

Cons

In late 2007, with the announcement that the company was for sale, a lot of the budget was slashed. Things we had become accustomed to were not there anymore. Things like good coffee (Starbucks coffee was cut and some cheap imitation coffee starting showing it's face in the kitchens and lounges), office supplies, etc were reduced. It became hard to get any special requests approved. Now that the company is no longer on the selling block, I am waiting to see if things go back to normal. The biggest downside of working for Dominion is that we don't make the salaries we could be making at other firms. I would argue that the average salary for a Software Engineer with Dominion is around $20,000 year lower than the average for this area. This, though, is not enough to drive me away because the work environent makes up for what the pay lacks.

Pros

It's a good place to start out, but unless you have connections or like to brown nose, don't plan to climb the ladder or have wages that are close to national averages. This used to be a really great place to work, but in the past 18 months it has really gone downhill.

Cons

Very clickish in the home office. They don't recognize the contributions of field office staff. They are very hung up on what a person's education is as opposed to what their abilities and knowledge are. Very little chance for advancement unless you are in the "in crowd". Communication with staff is poor at best, and many decsions are made in the vacuum of the 19th floor at head office, with little or no imput from the folks who are actually doing the work. No vision for the future, or at least none that is communicated to staff. Sweeping changes of structure are made, then re-done, without ever giving any of the changes a chance to suceed. Upper management also tends to listen only to their favorites, and never ask for or see two sides to any issue.
