Poisoned Potential

Pros

State of the art emergency hospital, great staff veterinarians

Cons

Upper management and HR create such a hostile work environment for the hospital staff. Your concerns and suggestions are met with cold opposition, and they will create an even more hostile work environment if you so choose to speak out on important animal welfare issues. I've witnessed countless coworkers receive very harsh reprimands when voicing legitimate concerns. The turnover rate is abnormally high, and it's abundantly clear why. The hospital staff is under appreciated, scrutinized when attempting at a work-life balance, and often mistreated by management. I've watched some of the most dedicated and ethically sound coworkers quit due to utter frustration at the corrupt politics of this organizations. Along the same line, I've watched many loyal and hardworking coworkers get fired for unjust reasons. It's beyond unfortunate that upper management can poison the great potential this organization holds. I hope someday this will change, and DoveLewis will clearly see the value in its employees, and start treating us with the respect we all deserve.

Ups and Downs

Pros

Wonderful ideals, amazing facility, passionate, highly professional, and engaged co-workers, sense of belonging to something that makes a difference/provides a quality service. The people who work here truly do care about what they do and the people and animals they help. It's inspiring.

Cons

Upper leadership often comes across as cold and caring more about money and adhering to rules than the effects these decisions have on the team on the floor and the patients they serve. I don't think that is truly the case, but that's how their actions often read. Some community programs have suffered due to seeming shift in nonprofit portion's mission lately. High turnover, often due to burnout (emergency medicine is stressful). Clients are almost always very stressed and emotional, and sometimes have unrealistic expectations of cost of emergency care/DoveLewis' limited charity funds. This can create stress for employees as well. Working at a nonprofit is not going to make you rich- it's rewarding work, but not necessarily financially.

Bad, bad, bad - period.

Pros

It really is very difficult to think of any positives other than relationships formulated with other staff members.

Cons

Words cannot even begin to express how terrible it was to work there. Complete lack of disrespect from senior leadership, specifically the CEO. The level of passive aggressive behavior was remarkable. The executive leadership (CEO, COO and HR Director) work systematically to make the lives of employees they dislike terrible so that they are forced to quit. Employee morale is in the dumps and the turnover in both the medical and business areas is getting ridiculous. Work-life balance is practically non-existent and employees are scolded for trying to maintain their sanity by taking days off. The employee benefits aren't even that great.
