Pros

Good benefits, flexible schedule, that is it.

Cons

Very underpaid as compared to other IT shops in the area. The HR department's rules and regulations as they relate to promotions and salary in addition to our performance evaluations not having any effect on our salary, makes it almost impossible to get ahead. Basically, if you come to work for a particular dept, and you work your fingers to the bone, and get performance reviews that show this, you will still only get the same pay increase as everyone else....usually a paltry 3 percent per year. As to promotions within your group/dept, not so much. There are basically two job categories...IT Analyst and Senior IT Analyst. Unfortunately, the number of Senior IT Analysts is limited to a certain number per group. So, if I were to come into a group already with the allowed number of Senior Analysts, and worked my butt off for 5, 10, 15 years (assuming nobody left), I would never get promoted. Really the only way to get a decent pay raise is to go to another dept, and the increase you receive here is also limited to 10 percent more than what you are making now. This basically prevents any of our lower echelon staff (help desk, etc) from following the natural progression to Desktop Support as the hiring manager cannot pay them what the position is calling for! As such, we have an environment which does not encourage promotion from within and has a high rate of turnover.

Pros

Benefits are great, wonderful health insurance. Great work to do. Some very interesting and exciting projects going on. Overall a decent place. There are a lot of very talented people working for Duke. nice folks to work with.

Cons

Politics, politics, and more politics. A lot of red tape anytime you want to do anything. A view that IT is not central to success at all. If you thrive in a large organization you'll be fine. Parking is terrible but you quickly get used to it. Like all universities if you don't have a PHD you don't get too far on the totem pole.

Pros

The best reason to work at Duke Health System is the benefits package. The paid time off policy allows for 35 days off per year. These 35 days include sick leave, holidays, and pay all in on time off bank. Also, the Health System matches contributions to its retirement plan at a rate of at least 8% of pay with a higher percentage match at higher levels of income.

Cons

The work hours are very long. Late nights and weekend work hours for financial analysts are common within the Corporate Finance department. Also, turnover is very high with minimal training.
