Pros

The best reason to work at Duke Health System is the benefits package. The paid time off policy allows for 35 days off per year. These 35 days include sick leave, holidays, and pay all in on time off bank. Also, the Health System matches contributions to its retirement plan at a rate of at least 8% of pay with a higher percentage match at higher levels of income.

Cons

The work hours are very long. Late nights and weekend work hours for financial analysts are common within the Corporate Finance department. Also, turnover is very high with minimal training.

Pros

Duke is a great place to work if you have a family. You start with 7 weeks of time off per year! They are very understanding of personal needs, and as the largest private employer in the state, there is great room for career growth. Also, when you are successful, you really feel like you have helped people in need.

Cons

In my division (Duke Health Technology Solutions), no one can be terminated. period. And unfortunately, there is a lot of incompetence at both the analyst and management levels. The fighting between the Associate CIOs is both public and disheartening. This is the most siloed organization I have ever been in. The real tragedy is we forget that we are a patient-care organization.

Pros

Duke offered me a well recognized stepping stone to future jobs. Schools love to see that you've worked for Duke University, especially medical and pharmacy schools. The pharmacy department in particular is very well run and organized. Nursing sometimes leaves something to be desired since they're always hiring new nurses.

Cons

Working for DUKE - ugh, only thing worse would be working for UNC! Honestly, though, the difficulty can sometimes be in what draws many people there - its a teaching institution. There is always a "fresh batch" of residents coming up so patience is absolutely necessary. Expect challenges and look forward to overcoming them and you will find a fulfilling job with DUMC.
