Pros

Flexible environment. Global. Friendly atmosphere in most groups. Cool projects and opportunities. Growth, despite the economy.

Cons

It's a very typical consulting company. You have to work hard and sell yourself (like an insurance marketer) to get "billable work", which could be an administrative task (like creating a table!). You may have to work overtime without being able to charge clients. Buddying a Partner gets you far otherwise very slow career advancement. No fantastic technical training.

Pros

If you work in one of the core environmental consulting practices then ERM is probably a good company to work for, however if you work in other specialist areas it doesn't come anywhere close to meeting the competition on compensation or reputation. There can be some good opportunities to work on interesting projects. ERM has a flat organisational structure - you have direct contact with senior management and fast response times. Good support services. All IT is in-house. Very responsive and knowledgeable. 5 star service.

Cons

ERM has several consulting levels: Consultant I, Consultant II, Senior Consultant, Principal Consultant, and Partner/Tech. Director. They try to make out that there is no 'gradism' and everyone is a consultant. This is not the case. There is a strong reliance on the established hierarchy of grades. Junior consultants (CI and CII) have limited client contact and often only get involved in delivery and not design of projects. You've got to love your job at ERM because the pay and reward is significantly below market rate. The London office has hot desking. I've seen this work in other companies but ERM has it so wrong. The desk layout is intrusive leading to a awkward work environment. You have to book your desk each week and aren't always able to sit close to your team mates, or even get a desk sometimes.

Pros

This company is dedicated to quality and professionalism and positioned for significant growth as a leader in its industry. I see this place in a brighter light than some of these other reviews because I worked for a half dozen other consultants prior to coming here. If you enjoy putting out a quality work product using real science and engineering backed by a team of top professionals (or more so, are ashamed of some of the places and people you used to work with) you'll find your nirvana here. Also, they work with every employee regarding work/life balance like no company I have ever seen. Essentially you manage your time. Great for people starting families.

Cons

Salary and benefits are not great, but are reasonable. Offices are switching to "hoteling" where no one has their own desk - I appreciate the concept but dislike the way it makes your work space less personal.
