The morale was quite low. This was only true for one of the two departments I was in and I don't want to give the impression that everybody in this department was negative. It's just that the loudest/strongest personalities were negative to a degree I wasn't comfortable with. Particularly, I was quite uncomfortable that I would regularly hear other employees spoken about negatively and sometimes even maliciously. Management was well aware of this as it was often done in the presence of a manager. Being in an entry-level role this added to the difficulty of asking for help. I sometimes wondered if I was spoken about with the same animus, though I will state that I was treated professionally and was never treated unkindly. As were the people I'd hear spoken about with malice.
After some time away I've come to understand that for my own particular personality and for the particular position I was in, the environment was detrimental to my mental health and not conducive to growth. This is all subjective of course. Obviously any future employee will be coming to this with their own unique personality and may be in a different place career-wise and might experience things differently. My experience is just a data-point for someone to consider what kind of energy/temperament that they want in their life.
As for the reasons for the low morale, I believe much of that has been covered here in other reviews and I'm not particularly eager to write any more than I've already written.
