Pros

Big name, big name clients, Edelman perks such as happy hours, free food, learning opportunities, etc., can become friends with coworkers. You're seldom not busy. HR is on top of their game.

Cons

Passive-aggressive and competitive coworkers and superiors, insane deadlines, no work/life balance, low pay, no potential for upward mobility, sometimes boring work. Lack of communication. Not everyone but a few do the people I worked with were immoral thieves and overcharged as well as manipulated their research. I had 5-7 bosses in a year and wasn't always clear on who I was reporting to. My boss would make me feel guilty very time I tried to take PTO. I never took all of it because I was too scared to. I was scared to ask for time off for doctor's appointments as well. If you don't eat lunch at your desk, they will think you aren't working hard enough. If you only work 8 hours a day, then you are not working hard enough and may be talked to about it, despite not getting paid enough to match the hours they want you to work. Be warned: this is a mill that will burn and churn you. I'm the type of person who thrives in collaborative and harmonious, not competitive environments. Edelman Berland broke me. And I saw it, and Edelman, break many of my peers. If you want this type of environment, you might as well go into investment banking and at least make money equivalent to the number of hours you are working and the crappy life you are having.

Pros

Fun employee treats around the office, like happy hours, breakfast snacks, ice cream, etc.

Cons

They do not care about entry-level employees. I worked there when I was an assistant account executive and an account executive, and I worked 12-hour days for almost two years. Even with all my hard work and dedication, my managers still treated me horribly. I will never forget when one of my female managers publicly yelled at me, multiple times, in front of others, for not doing something correctly. My managers never took the time to help me learn - they only got mad when I couldn't read their minds. Unfortunately, I had two horrible female managers for the majority of my time there, who constantly made me feel like an insignificant failure. I even brought the issue to HR at one point, but I left the HR office feeling unheard and unseen. As soon as another opportunity presented itself, I left. I still have PTSD when I walk/drive by the Aon Center. My starting salary was also $28,000, which is ridiculously low (even compared to my equal counterparts at Edelman, which I discovered later).

Pros

- strong mid-level management. - few people say "no." - some very talented people, though its spread unevenly.

Cons

- low pay for talent - tons of bureaucracy - lots of turf wars, part of the fact there are too many managers and fiefdoms. - self-starting is discouraged, leaving the company at the mercy of big accounts that can go away quickly. This is why the company is losing money and not able to weather storms. - there is no rhyme or reason to promotion and reward. - The most senior management levels -- including the CEO -- are simply immoral. Promising to avoid layoffs, then doing layoffs, was bad enough. Promoting the CEO's daughter a couple weeks later is, best case scenario, tone-deaf. Worst case, it actively says the CEO doesn't care about what his employees think.

Edelman Response

Some of your core comments-around reorganizing responsibilities so certain folks can focus more on clients and think less about their "turf" are things we're actively improving now. However, while it's clear you were unhappy with parts of your experience here, i have to share that your personal insights are not in line with those that we've collected from the vast majority of existing employees. That isn't to invalidate your thoughts. From my perspective our leaders most certainly base their decisions on data and thoughtful evaluation. I won't disagree that laying off employees when we truly hated to do so and didn't originally intend to was a very hard and painful decision that we wish we didn't have to make. It was also a product of a global pandemic that our business was not immune to. I've been very proud of how our leadership has handled the unprecedented challenges experienced this year and I can share that based on data, the vast majority if our employees agree with me. I'm sorry that was not your experience and i wish you the best in these challenging times. Maria O'Keeffe, US Chief Talent Officer
