Pros

Privately Held; Global Network; Respected Brand; Clients

Cons

Edelman manages its external image smartly through its media connections and PR know how. Unfortunaetly it doesn't apply the same energy and creativity to cultivating its staff and workplace. At one time it was an organization where you'd fine real stability and consistency in the ranks but turnover and politics have become negative forces and the culture has suffered. The agency structure has a large base of junior staff managed by a lean management layer so personal attention and career development is sporadic. In contrast to the large public networks that have access to strong creative, media, consulting, digital resources, Edelman lacks depth in these areas particularly creative. Also not strong in original content creation versus distribution. Also a dismal record when it comes to a committment to older workers and diversity in the management ranks. In an industry that champions "30 under 30"and "40 under 40" Edelman quietly sheds its graying workforce losing valuable experience and leadership in the process.

Pros

Lots of opportunities on big name clients; if you push yourself, you'll learn a lot. Some opportunities to travel depending on the account. Great resume builder.

Cons

Your account sets your experience and work/life balance. I was unlucky that I ended up on a big name account that was very demanding. This translated to very high levels of work and being extremely underpaid for what I was doing. Managers expected perfection and touted a work/life balance, yet chastised you if you tried to have one. It was extremely negative and the tone was set by the VPs on the account. VPs expected junior staff to do all major work and run on full cylinders all the time.

Pros

Food cart on Tuesday & Thursday Thirsty Third Thursday's Free fruit & Starbucks coffee Casual dress code

Cons

Too many low, mid and high-level managers giving you work to do. It's rediculous. Because it's a pool-based system for VPs and above, they overwork employees and don't hire enough so they can pocket the remaining budget money at the end of each fiscal year. Ageism: they will not hire someone in their late 20s and 30s hoping to break into the industry in an entry level position (AAE) as they like to start them out of college. It's very tough to transfer to the account side when you've been hired as an admin. No career growth for admins. Period. They run the private company as if it publically owned as they are so focused on profit. Even at the expense of employees. Turnover rate is alarming. Long hours, especially near the end of the fiscal year. A few long-term male managers are very flirtatious which creates an uncomfortable work environment.
