Pros

Emory has a good reputation. The benefits are OK. They are appreciative of the knowledge and skill that their more mature nurses have to offer, and work to retain these experienced nurses. The CNO of Emory Healthcare is great, and quality of care has improved greatly because of the Magnet initiative that she is driving.

Cons

Benefits are not nearly as good as they once were. In the past, the fact that Emory paid less per hour was offset by their great benefits package. Not so anymore. When the economy tanked a couple of years ago, Emory was quick to cut employee benefits, using the excuse that they were saving jobs by doing so. As the economy has improved, Emory Healthcare is doing quite well, quietly and successfully merging and acquiring St. Jos., Johns Creek, Clark Holder, and opening numerous satellite clinics. In spite of this, there has been no discussion of restoring what the employees gave up when times were tougher for the company. In fact, employee benefits, healthcare in particular (ironically), continue to be cut, while salaries are becoming more stagnant. Emory gets big tax breaks for their not for profit status, and is expected in return to give back to the community by providing charitable care. They give some, but not nearly what they should. Emory has always and still does cater to their wealthiest clients while greatly limiting access for Medicaid and other indigent patients.

Pros

You will experience very complex cases. Working with patients and families through some of the most difficult times in their life is the best nursing possible. This process is extremely rewarding, however is not understand on an organizational level.

Cons

The bedside nurse does not have the tools needed to perform the job. A large portion of time is spent finding the right equipment. In addition to supplies and equipment being poorly managed, the physically taxing work makes the turnover rate high. Therefore not only is every nurse's body fatigued, with minimal breaks and no lunches, the units are also chronically understaffed. This understaffing leads to double usual work loads, chaotic units, below average care, and even sentinel events. Benefits have become horrible over the years. When Emory realized a few years ago how severely over budget they were, they cut contributions to employee retirement funds. In addition, another first place they cut was critical staffing pay. In general, their benefits only include "discounts". The only thing 100% covered under any emory health benefit plan is the flu shot (which they will fire you if you do not take), routine physicals, an eye exam, and a annual gyn appointment. However, it will be impossible to make an appointment with an in network GYN provider, and therefore you will be forced to pay to see someone out of network. Emory is striving to be MAGNET, but they do not care about their employees.

Pros

The care provided by Emory is superb. The clinical teams offer top-notch service and are well respected. Management makes efforts to ensure that everyone (patients, families, staff, etc...) have a voice.

Cons

At times it is simply hard to get things done. There are multiple signatures required for things that should easily be pushed along.
