Pros

The work environment at Emory is friendly, and working in higher education often affords more flexibility. Emory offers very attractive benefits, including a courtesy scholarship if you want to take classes or enter a part-time degree program while you work. There are also a number of short courses, especially for career and skill development, that are offered through Learning Services. The Faculty and Staff Assistance program that offers a variety of useful support programs, even counseling, for free. Emory is place with a solid reputation for excellence, which also makes it a great place to work!

Cons

The downside of working in academics anywhere is that the compensation is lower (compared to our counterparts in corporations). Also, Emory is big, so depending on where and who you work for, the "message from the top" doesn't always trickle down to those on the front lines. In other words, it's sometimes difficult to understand the vision.

Pros

Emory is a place that fosters growth in all senses of the word - they balance work and life together to maximize opportunities to learn. From the colloquial atmosphere to the encouragement to explore and think differently, Emory challenges you to become a better professional. Their approach to problem solving and staying competitive in an increasingly crowded landscape of higher education makes it amazing to "be on the inside" and see the school as a business in addition to a place of study. Coworkers are kind, caring, and as far from cutthroat as possible. Everyone's there to help each other, and everyone wants each other to succeed.

Cons

Like any big business, departments are fairly compartmentalized. There isn't nearly enough communication to truly allow each department to support each other in the way they're envisioned. Management turnover is fairly high, and students are never truly satisfied with the job you do. Long-range planning initiatives are conceptually incredible but often fall short in the execution, leaving staff to pick up the pieces. This often involves angry parents, inconvenienced students, and dissatisfied staff. Traffic in the Clifton Corridor (the Emory Area)is horrendous no matter what time of day, and it sometimes takes an hour to travel one mile from campus at rush hour.
