Pros

Decent benefits: healthcare, retirement, days off. Nothing exceptional, but good compared to many other in the region

Cons

An unfortunate but necessary side effect of being an educational institution is that staff are at the bottom of the pile when it comes to what leadership is concerned about, behind students and then faculty. However, the level of support from leadership given to staff is a tiny fraction of what is given to faculty. Many faculty are horrible managers and engage in some abusive behavior to their staff, but HR does nothing. Central HR in general does not seem to care at all for the concerns of staff, don't expect to get anything from them. They pretend to care more for their employees than other large employers in the area, but their behavior shows a deep-seated pattern of repeatedly exploiting their staff-level employees.

Pros

Good benefits for retirement and contributions if you survive working there long enough. Offers Hybrid/remote work at the discretion of your manager.

Cons

I want to preface this post by stating that, while working for this university, I appreciated the research and difference this research was making for the community in Atlanta and others in the USA. There are great people here who work to keep this place afloat without the recognition they deserve. However, it is with with my recent role that I felt the need to leave this workplace and make sure to comment on my circumstances that lead to my resignation , During my last role here, I was compelled to overwork and maintain the a job role that should have been at least 2 different roles. My boss ( one of the research professors) consistently undermined my performance with her toxic work manner, forcing me to work long hours, vacations and weekends. She would them proceed to replicate my work anyways because she refused accept anything that was not done by her and then take credit for all my work. She also planned the project ( before my arrival) in a ill-researched manner that caused major issues from the research participants she was using. She showed constant harshness to her own team members and did not work well under pressure, often adding more stress by last minute add-ons not planned on a regular basis. Additionally, she consistently undermined my professional capability and grew great mistrust with my work, even though I maintain great transparency and openness. Overall , This University seems to prize itself in overworking their employees while consistingly hiring management and research doctors that are only capable of treating their managers, coordinators and assistants with contempt and disregard. They cozy up to their HR heads and hire those who are family members or friends to be their minions in order to maintain control and their so-called superiority over their employees. They do a lot of fake diversity and inclusion gimmicks, but often disregard women and those who have disabilities who work there. I have worked in two different departments and for over 5 years here, I have seen high levels of inequality with wages, sex and race exhibited not only to myself, but many exceptional employees. Unfortunately, They continue to hire bullies here and promote their aggressiveness, toxic manner of work, and laziness with raises and titles. Unless this changes, they will and have now have a great rate of turnover.

Pros

Nice benefits, opportunities for training are plentiful. Offers work from home days for some, but that depends on your school or unit.

Cons

Unfortunately, leadership seems to only value intellectuals and academics. Many of whom know nothing about managing people or best practices. Sadly, they don’t listen to the people with boots on the ground who actually do the work. There has been tons of turn over this year, likely because many are sick of seeing incompetent people be promoted. It is full of red tape and nepotism. The culture can be toxic, everything is treated like an emergency.
