I only worked for this company for one month. I learned immediately that they were not completely transparent throughout the interview and initial orientation process. They describe this as a marketing company but the reality is that you're basically a sales associate for the companies they represent (Directv, Verizon, etc.). You literally undergo daily training sessions that are redundant, to say the least, and felt more like "pep-talks" to distract you away from your horrible pay and the hour a day you get to spend with family.
My daily schedule was split usually consisting of "pep-talks" in the morning, going home from the unnecessary meeting, then driving an hour or two away to a sams club or costco to sell phones, cable and a security system. Initially, I was told that I would get hourly pay and a commission based on how much you sell. About three weeks in, it became apparent that this was not the case from my checks (they were never more than $300). I sold more than 12 phones, 7 cable packages, and 4 security system leads within that one month of work, and I never got any of that commission. It was then explained to me that you could only get hourly ($10/hr) OR commission and commission was only an option if the amount of commission you would have made was more than what the hourly rate was. I was visibly confused and frustrated by this and they started to go into the whole "you have been doing SO well, especially being someone new, if you keep it up you'll be a manager soon and make way more."
This eventually causes problems at home since I'm making almost nothing, leaving my wife to pay bills and me barely contributing to groceries and my car note. I try to stick it out thinking of what they said about the potential for success and I also try to convince my wife of this, but she's a smart cookie and was not buying the crap they were selling as much as I was.
The final straw (which you would have thought would be the dishonesty about the pay since I had been working a full month--only being home for a couple of hours a day--and made less than $900) was when they asked me to fly to another state for a week.
Now i know most people would be like. . .ummm you're traveling for free. Isn't that a good thing? Well they literally told me the day before I was supposed to fly out and my wife and I had literally just moved to this area and of course this happened to be my wife's birthday and she would be alone for it if I decided to travel last-minute. I let them know I would have to call my wife, but I really didn't think I should go. Unsurprisingly, my wife was extremely upset. We were already barely making ends meet, and now she was going to be alone on her birthday with her family living hundreds of miles away. I entered the meeting room again and let the bosses know I wouldn't be able to travel that week on such short notice.
At first they tried to flatter me about my work ethic and performance over the weeks I had been there. When they saw that I really wasn't letting up, they kind of made it seem like I would have to choose this trip or risk losing my jobs /any hope for future promotions.
I was feeling very conflicted but told them I would let them know within the next couple of hours after I spoke to my wife at home. Needless to say, my wife was pissed and really didn't want me to go, but with tears welling in her eyes, she eventually agreed. I knew that even though she said I could go, this would be a decision that could make or break our marriage especially because there were other very stressful things going on in our lives, including the current financial situation. That being said, I called my supervisor and told him I would not be going on the trip. He started up the talk they gave me in the office. When I explained the situation with my wife, and that I was worried that I could lose her because of this, he then went on to say "you have to make sacrifices for success and this is one of those moments when you'll have to sacrifice to succeed." That was THE FINAL STRAW. He was literally telling me to choose this trip even if it meant losing my wife. This company has no regard for family or employee financial security. In this moment I told my supervisor that I resign and that I would choose my wife over anything.
The job comes with NO benefits, you don't get paid the full hours you work/attend meetings/travel, they are shady about paying you commission that you've earned, and they don't care about you, your family, or the lengths you go to earn them money. Save yourself the time, energy, and financial struggle and go and work for one of the many other companies in Raleigh that actually value their workers and offer benefits, time off, and hire management that wants to see your FAMILY prosper and not just their company's account.
