Pros
People are generally quite pleasant. Fairly laid back environment for the most part. I get to work remotely for the foreseeable future. Opportunity for interesting work. This depends on your situation, I'm definitely lucky in this department compared to some of my colleagues.
Cons
Management refuses to fire people who are literally useless Too much lazy thinking Lack of alignment. Too much reliance on offshore contractors instead of building a good engineering culture in house. Massive amounts of technical debt that will never be eradicated because leadership ignores it and plenty of people are too incompetent to deal with it. I feel like laziness and avoidance of difficult problems is the biggest issue with engineering at AmFam. Management wants simple solutions wrapped up for them that they don't have to digest or augment at all. Let's just top down apply SAFE dogmatically and ignore cases where it doesn't work. Let's also just throw a ton of contractors at our development problems while ignoring that they aren't doing a good job and are making the system worse. Also, let's just have no accountability and pretend that everyone is equally capable when a good portion of the employee base is either just unwilling to learn or does not have the skills required to get the job done.
