Pros

If you are even marginally competent, you can get promoted at Ashley. Good work life balance.

Cons

There are so many things about Ashley that are super problematic, it is hard to be exhaustive in this space. From your first contact with the brand as an employee, you are barraged with anti-worker sentiment. Ashley does not care for nor support its employees. I will demonstrate that more explicitly throughout the remainder of this review. You are given ten days of PTO—inclusive of sick days. You receive six holidays + your birthday. In total, you only have 15 days off for the whole year. This does not change as you rise in the company, nor can you negotiate for more. Pay is incredibly low. You are limited to a 10% raise per promotion. If you accelerate too quickly, you will not be compensated adequately. But don’t worry, Ashley also likes to tie those promotions in with your annual cost of living increase! It’s a great cost saving measure for the business. They will also refuse to show you your promotion package. Which also takes forever to happen because the CEO has to hand sign and approve every single promotion/raise. Remember, there is no negotiating. Ashley’s stance is that we should feel lucky to get anything at all. The CEO is a complete narcissist. He insists on personally handing out bonuses. The leadership team will instruct everyone to clap super loud for him as he enters a room. He then goes to shake everyone’s hand personally as he passes them their bonus. Don’t worry though, as he says, “he’s already had COVID.” We have had a mass exodus of people in the last several months. When asked about it, leadership’s position was that “workers don’t actually know what they want, that the leadership team knows better.” Here’s the thing, you should listen to your employees—you don’t in fact know what is best for them. The environment is an old boys club. Incompetent men get put in positions they are unqualified for and have no business being in. HR held a series of focus groups to identify employee needs. The biggest piece of feedback was around a lack of maternity leave (an absolute disgrace for a billion dollar company). Women used to receive 12 weeks of leave at 60% pay through short term disability. At the beginning of the year, they touted a new 6-week fully paid maternity leave. They never clarified that you would no longer receive an additional six weeks at 60% pay through short term disability buy up coverage. Several women found out they would only have 6 weeks once they were already on leave, because women, and particularly vulnerable women, don’t matter at Ashley! When confronted, the official response was that these women should be lucky to have gotten the six weeks at all. What’s worse is there are pregnant people at work today who still have not been informed they will only have six weeks of leave. The CEO pretends to care about investing in initiatives, but when push comes to shove, he will nickel and dime his way into a half-baked product and blame everyone else for the terrible result.

It’s unfortunate that your time with Ashley isn’t rewarding, but we do appreciate your feedback. We’re glad you recognized the importance we place on having a good work life balance, as well as the opportunities our employees have for career advancement. Those are two aspects of life at Ashley that we are especially proud to offer. We are also proud of the fact that our CEO travels during the holidays to personally shake the hand of every eligible employee and give them a profit sharing check. That’s a tradition we hope to continue ever year. We do however, need to correct one troubling error you made about our new paid pregnancy leave benefit. We did not reduce the amount of leave available to our pregnant employees. What we did do this year is offer mothers who need time off to recover from birth 6 weeks of fully paid leave – that’s 100% of their salary or wages for 6 weeks following the birth of their child! In addition, for those who participate in our short term disability “buy up” program, they remain eligible for an additional 7 weeks of time off at 60% pay. We prepared an FAQ regarding the interaction between short term disability benefits and paid pregnancy leave earlier in the year to specifically address that issue. If you were confused, there may be others, so based on your feedback, we are going to recirculate our FAQs. We would be happy to speak to you personally about your feedback and encourage you to reach out to your Human Resources Business Partner to start the process.

Pros

Really the only positive aspect of working in office in tampa is the employees.

Cons

The company doesn’t seem to care about their in-office employees. Over the years they have stopped giving any perks to working for their corp office - there used to be a sense of care with company picnics, raffles, warehouse furniture sales for employees, EOY bonuses, even holiday parties, but all that is gone now. They don’t even offer separate PTO and sick time, it’s all lumped in together. But wait, that’s not all. Last year an employee came dressed up as ICE for Halloween and HR didn’t do anything about it, which was shocking to so many employees but with the political leaning of the C suite, I can’t say that’s surprising at all. And finally, there have been a handful of layoffs over the past few years and one thing you should keep in mind is if you get laid off for any reason, no matter your tenure at the company you will only get one week of severance. There have been several ex employees who have worked for 5+ years and have had very little compensation for it. Save your time and go apply for a company who actually cares about the people who work for them.
