Pros

Residents were friendly. Good people. Some of the core staff cared about their jobs, but seemed overworked.

Cons

Disorganized. And read on . . . I wanted to contact the CEO, Manager of Personnel (John Moore or Anne Pinter) or the lead manager for Atria Canada even, but after 30 mins. on various Atria websites and google searches I can't seem to find contact info. Where are they hiding? My daughter worked at Atria on Douglas, but resigned because front-line staff in service and housekeeping are paid min. wage, and ridiculously, are not paid a split shift 1 hour wage for having to hang around between meal services. (Not illegal in BC, but exploitative, knowing other jurisdictions' labor laws that require split shift premium pay that Atria operates in). This facility is located almost 1 km from a bus stop, so my daughter had to walk at night (after dinner service) to a lonely stop on what is essentially a highway. The workers here are mostly young people. The saddest part is she liked the work and the residents, and as a part-time university student in social work, is interested in senior care. She is an excellent worker. For any retirement facility, the buck stops at the front line staff that interact daily with residents. Those are the dining and housekeeping staff. Paying min. wage and not providing more considerate methods of "helping" these young workers by providing split shift premiums or a bonus for hard work is not kosher. For example, one time she was the only person who showed up for a meal service shift. She and the site manager did the whole service themselves. She run ragged and was simply told thanks a lot. Earnings: $21 (before deductions) for 2 hours of work that takes 45 mins each way by bus to get to work for this shift. She has now found another job as a cashier at a small owner-operated grocery store for $2 more per hour than Atria pays. A grocery store! With single digit profit margins! To me that is sad. Sad for her. Sad for Atria to not recognize or have ways to "stay on top" of valuing their front line staff more. Staff with potential. PS) She was scared to say anything, because she wants a good reference.

Pros

Fantastic Residents and an amazing Engaged Life program. Excellent staff at Support center in Kentucky.

Cons

Atria Senior Living in US has a fantastic model. but Atria Retirement Canada does not following the same principles. When Atria acquired the Holiday communities the "Live In Couples" were targeted, but ironically, the regional team kept the core players. So the Canadian culture stayed as it was rather than evolving to the Atria culture. Sales is all that matters no matter the cost to the rest of staff or residents. No work life balance for salaried employees.

Pros

probably a decent amount but i don’t care to give them any positive notes

Cons

Most companies offer incentives to get the covid vaccine. This company took over our community which previously did not require vaccinations and threatened to fire me if I did not get a vaccine. They fired people who worked for the community for years and were loved by the residents due to old instances on their background check, one of which especially had proven the be trustworthy and reliable. It’s been months and we still haven’t found someone to fill our maintenance position. They promised to replace equipment and other things but we haven’t seen anything, our ovens have broken twice more since then and had to be fixed going a week without one at a time. When they took over their people messed up our internet and the kitchen office didn’t have internet for a month before they got it fixed. The take over was very sloppy, corporate would ask why we weren’t wearing Atria uniforms when they came to visit but none were sent for about a month. The kitchen didn’t get any information on what we were to do for menus for quite a while too, we were just making it up weekly. My health insurance cost taken out of my check went up over $100 while i was only given a $0.36 raise. (basically losing money working here now) Which leads to another point, i was due for my raise with the original company that hired me in, and i planned to be pretty firm on atleast $0.50 until they came and gave everyone a % of wage raise. The hiring process with Atria is so slow and we’re understaffed struggling.
