Pros

Avalara is a large company in a still growing market, and there's the "promise" of large returns for the lucky few that get stock options from the PE firm that bought Avalara in 2022. There's a lot of opportunity to work on unique software in a growing company (at least there would be if not for the cons)

Cons

Avalara has had the same CEO for 18 years, from inception, through IPO, going private, and what is expected to be a second IPO in the next few years. This has led to a legacy culture where a lot of new ideas are given lip service, but not a lot is actually done. Enterprise level initiatives are made mandatory through policy, but are left to the teams to solve on their own, leading to redundancy, inconsistency and inefficiency. The company espouses it's culture as unique and revolutionary, but in the end the culture is little more than wearing orange and telling senior leaders what a great job they're doing. No one seems to want to actually be critical of the way things are, and when you do speak up, you're just pandered to until you go away and get in line. The company is 100% vested in overseas employee growth with over 50% of employees now in India and a large portion in Brazil, only adding to the inconsistencies and inefficiencies mentioned earlier.

Pros

Is Avalara a great place to work? It depends on the team you are on. Pros: - I love my team. I have great co-workers. I feel like leadership to the VP level understands the value we bring and advocates for our work throughout the company - I like being able to go into the office and see people and bounce ideas around - My manager is always pushing me to learn new things and get out of my comfort zone - We just got a new CEO and I am super excited about him and his vision. Everyone who has actually been in meetings with him is excited too.

Cons

It depends on the team you are on. Cons: - Some teams are not as curious/helpful as others. I often have to check and recheck the work they do, after I have chased them multiple times to even complete the work - The layoff fear is real, the idea that at any point your position could be eliminated because they want to keep that revenue per headcount KPI down is everywhere
