Pros

- Great work life balance - Realistic goal setting - Fully remote - Nice Seattle office (although usually empty) - Allows to work remotely from anywhere in the world, including other office locations - They might be going back to public before end of year. If this happens, things might get better?

Cons

- Compensation. After being acquired in October 2022, they stopped provided RSU's as compensation. All RSU's for current employees ended in February. For me, this effectively reduced my overall comp by 25%. Absolutely zero response from leadership to this - Most teams are forced to take early/late meetings with engineers in other timezones (India mostly) - Permissions are siloed. You will experience blockers that from teams 12+ hours ahead - Difficult to stir communication because nearly everyone (in engineering) is camera off in Zoom meetings and unresponsive on Slack - Engineering expertise is quite low. Although this has always been the case for Avalara. They are unable to entice top talent because comp is low - Engineering all-hands meetings are laughable from CTO Danny Fields. It's a strategy of "throw AI at the wall and see what sticks"

Pros

Is Avalara a great place to work? It depends on the team you are on. Pros: - I love my team. I have great co-workers. I feel like leadership to the VP level understands the value we bring and advocates for our work throughout the company - I like being able to go into the office and see people and bounce ideas around - My manager is always pushing me to learn new things and get out of my comfort zone - We just got a new CEO and I am super excited about him and his vision. Everyone who has actually been in meetings with him is excited too.

Cons

It depends on the team you are on. Cons: - Some teams are not as curious/helpful as others. I often have to check and recheck the work they do, after I have chased them multiple times to even complete the work - The layoff fear is real, the idea that at any point your position could be eliminated because they want to keep that revenue per headcount KPI down is everywhere
