Pros

The people and the clients.

Cons

Avalere Health used to be a genuinely great place to work which is why it’s so frustrating to see how far things have slipped since the merger and the new senior leadership came in. I still work with some incredibly smart and supportive people but the team is shrinking fast and the best talent are walking out the door. Day to day, it’s the junior and mid-level analysts/consultants doing the majority of the content development, project management, client management, and even strategic thinking. More senior management provide strategic oversight but are mostly too busy working on endless proposals that we don’t seem to win. There seems to be a bottle neck for advancement beyond consultant/senior consultant. It’s demoralising to see people early in their careers carrying the majority of the weight with little reward. On the topic of reward, pay is a major letdown. Salaries haven’t kept up with the market and we’ve fallen noticeably behind competitors. No inflation adjustments. No bonuses. Just the occasional well done and piece of commissioned glass we’re supposed to feel grateful for. Honestly, it’s embarrassing. Leadership love talking about ‘transparency’ but nothing about their behaviour feels transparent. They speak in riddles, hide behind corporate jargon, and glaze over real issues with this bizarre forced positivity. And the whole ‘every patient possible’ slogan… I still have no idea what this is supposed to mean or how it’s a business strategy. It just feels like empty branding. Speaking of branding, the constant rebrands are unnecessary, disruptive and pointless . All that money spent on changing fonts and colours when it could’ve gone toward paying employees fairly or actually investing in people. Overall, I’m disappointed. The company had so much potential and there are still great people here, but leadership choices have made it really hard to feel hopeful about where things are headed.

Pros

Incredible co-workers who genuinely supported each other doing innovative interesting work.

Cons

Culture has eroded in recent years. Hours are unsustainable for those driving success in the business. Significant talent has been lost and not replaced. Internal folks keep taking on more and stepping into roles previously held by people with decades more experience and more robust staffs. They are setup to fail by a leadership with minimal understanding of large parts of the business. Leadership is toxic, feigning interest in feedback from employees, learning the business, and restructuring for long term growth and health of the business. Instead, egotistical leadership interested in associating their names with shiny digital products or propping up their pet projects continues to burn cash while the core business suffers. Such a classic case of buying a brand and hollowing out what built it.
