Pros

- Research background and networking with outstanding companies in the field (research and industry) - Working with cutting-edge technology - Attending conferences and meetings all around the world - Flexible work-time and vacation - Social activities - Location

Cons

- Very low salaries - Very hierarchical organization with a single authoritarian leader - Absolute lack of management skills in direction/management positions - Groups are constantly falling apart. Senior people leave BSC by default and they are not being replaced. PhD students struggle a lot. Some of them quit PhD - Long-term workers are burned out. They stay because they are tied to Barcelona

Pros

International exposure and a relaxed environment.

Cons

People continuously late at meeting/talks. The center is advertised as a multicultural center with people from over 50 different countries, but at BSC English is used as the last resource. It's common to have meetings or daily conversations in a language that not all participants understand enough; making integration for new people very difficult. This is not only my own experience as I've heard many people complaining about it. If you want to research at an international level, please, switch to English. The same is valid for emails. Depending on which department your group belongs, there might be no or rare opportunities to network with other groups. Low salary compared to industry.
