Pros

Since Belk was born in the South, they receive a great deal of traffic from a loyal "Southern Bell" following who rarely shop anywhere else. Because of that loyal customer base, they do a good volume of business in most locations.

Cons

The never ending stream of sales and coupons is great for the customer, but not so great if you're a manager and associates in charge of those frequent sale sets. The company culture is very clickish and non-inclusive. They promote that they are a grassroots company with a similar culture, but they tend to practice exclusion. They promote that they want to move into the 21st century with their slogan, "Modern Southern Style", but in truth they want things to stay exactly the same as they've been in previous years. They do regular "coffee chats" to get employee feedback, but nothing is done to institute change. Most employees, including management avoid speaking up out of fear of retaliation from upper management and corporate...so things just stay the same. On top of all that, they are a perfect company for managers who likes to live at work, because you will work far more than 40-50 hours a week on a regular basis. During holiday season, management can expect to work double their regularly scheduled hours because Belk opens at 5am and 6am and closes at 11pm and 12pm and no matter how hard you work, it's never done. Something is always broken in a sense and we race to fix it, including coming in to work on our precious few days off. Expect to work on Thanksgiving as well. For a grassroots company, they don't care about family or traditions, only making every dollar they can...no matter the cost.

Pros

I loved my job. I’m met so many wonderful people. And the associates couldn’t have been better.

Cons

I hurt myself and had to have surgery, and I was on Worker’s Comp. with limited availability. Because hours were short in operations, they made up this crazy position and wanted me to be ”lead” of the markdown team. I knew that meant for the most part to do go backs. I told them I wasn’t allowed to be on my feet that long and so she said they couldn’t accommodate me and I had to leave. And then the manager had the nerve to call their workers comp and told them I wasn’t coming into work. The management at that time was horrible. But there was a time when I first started working there that to store manager, and the assistant manager were wonderful. We were all so sad they left, but it didn’t take this new manager that I was talking about any time at all to lose almost the entire store associates.
