Great Mission, poor executive suite, toxic culture of mistrust, lack of innovation - Supervisor Bloodworks Northwest Employee Review

Pros

The research wing, dedicated professionals, critical service to the community

Cons

Extremely poor and overpaid executive suite. The former CEO was paid over $1 million per year. He was well respected in the transfusion world as an MD, yet lacked fundamental business acumen and talent. What is worse, is he took no steps to improve his skills in that area during his entire 11 year tenure. There is a toxic culture of mistrust. BWNW solicits feedback and ideas from the staff, then either use the ideas as their own, or takes action against those who bring up the shortcomings. Takes no action to remedy issues brought up by the staff. Complete lack of innovation at the blood center, despite being in one of the most innovative cities in the USA.

Pros

Coworkers are great, donors are (usually) great to work with as well, I really like my supervisor, pay is very competitive, there are opportunities to advance in the company, it feels good to have a job that helps the community.

Cons

Scheduling is all over the place, it can be hard to get the days off that you want. Some shifts are really long- I've gotten home at 7pm after a 12 hour shift, and then been expected to be back at work by 5 am the next day. Donor services (as a department) doesn't get as much recognition or appreciation as other departments - despite being vital to the company's mission and a huge portion of their labor force. Health insurance options could be better. Attendance policy is *very* strict. Late arrivals are the #1 reason anyone gets fired from this job. (But they don't take write-ups for behavior nearly as seriously.)
