ICYMI - Bonterra History: Bonterra was formed in mid-late 2021 by merging together EveryAction/NGPVan, Social Solutions, and Cybergrants. They later purchased Network for Good. Prior to the merger, EveryAction/NGPVan had been on a buying spree and had acquired (among others) Salsa Labs and GiveGab. EveryAction for its part had not even completed the transition/integration of its acquired employees before the merger. Additionally, RIGHT before the merger, EveryAction voted in a union but when I left months and months later (and to my knowledge, to date), the union has not successfully negotiated a contract. So really what we are talking about here is a bunch of companies that were less than a couple hundred people very quickly forced together to a now ~1000 person conglomerate. The whole process was completely mismanaged and the result was chaos and just toxicity. Executive decision making was never transparent. Internal and client-facing communications from leadership was always A) delayed B) reactive and never proactive C) never successfully rolled out company-wide and therefore many teams were always on different pages/different levels of understanding. Even while team members constantly broached areas of concern in terms of client *and* employee experience, executives presented a very rosy-colored view of how the company was doing and never once acknowledge that there were issues to be addressed. Definition of toxic positivity. Add into that just the general toxicity between teammates due to the very, very loud political vibe/culture at the company. Call me old fashion--even though I am wayyyyy closer to college graduation than I am to retirement--but I was raised to not bring politics into work. And even though, I generally agreed with most of the political values being espoused internally, I became increasingly uncomfortable watching teammates/friends be ostracized because they did not believe the same. Last thing to note, this company is TERRIBLE at managing benefits and payroll. They are constantly making mistakes.
