Pros
T1D is a very worthwhile cause. High efficiency rate; large amount of funds go to research. Passionate and supportive volunteers.
Cons
My chapter in a small city was in a region with much larger cities with huge affluent donor bases, and we were expected to perform on par with them. Which brings me to... Unrealistic fundraising goals. At times my goals were doubled year over year, even when we didn't meet the previous year's goals. This led to a cycle of being set up to fail at every single fundraising event, with blame forced down the chain to the hardest working staff at the bottom. High amounts of stress bred backstabbing and bullying among chapter staff rather than collaboration and support. There was NO work life balance. I was paid barely enough to make ends meet and I wasn't able to have much of a personal life. I worked several weekends per year and 1-2 nights per week without being permitted to take comp time after. I was bothered with snippy texts and emails 24/7, including when other staff knew I was at a family member's funeral. The health benefits were fine. The amount of vacation and holiday time was slightly below average and taking PTO was strongly discouraged and caused resentment from other employees.
