Pros
JDRF’s mission was front and center in all the work we did - and therefore the work felt important and meaningful. That was always a good feeling and I do miss that! Although JDRF is a large organization, I always felt like there was above average autonomy at the local level. The regional director for the Southeast was amazing and I felt like our local voices were represented in national conversations. JDRF does a much better job than most at ensuring local chapters feel appreciated for the work they contribute to the organization and mission. The local volunteers are incredibly passionate, highly engaged, and committed to the organization.
Cons
COVID had a devastating impact on the overall event-based fundraising of JDRF. Although it was in no way predictable, it did make the last couple of years pretty difficult. I feel terrible that it happened to JDRF and other nonprofits with heavy event fundraising models. I’m sure they are building back stronger than ever and I wish them nothing but more advancements and a day with no T1D!
