Every AB is equipped with a work iPhone, iPad, and credit card that reimburses company travel expenses, comp shopping, etc.; there is an annual sample sale where you can buy sample product for very cheap (all money goes to their charity); Starbucks and good cafeteria in office; beautiful building. Eventually, after training, your buyer will assign you with a class of merchandise that you will own, negotiate, and buy for the company, in preparation for becoming an Associate Buyer. The CEO and a lot of the board members are a lot of fun, very nice, and the company provides many opportunities for newcomers to receive invaluable advice from them, one-on-one. My DMM was extremely supportive and always eager to give advice and life guidance for either personal, or work-related topics.

Cons

You constantly feel like you are walking on eggshells and the next verbal or psychosocial attack is coming at any moment. Company turnover is high. Work/life balance is nearly nonexistent between the days you travel to NYC and the expectations of office days; 60 hours a week was expected, on top of checking emails at the last possible second, in case your buyer or vendor suddenly changed their mind about where to meet. Buyers can be emotionally and mentally abusive toward their assistants and their allocation team, releasing inappropriate explosive outbursts, giving contradictory instructions, contradictory performance feedback, and holding them to impossible expectations. The stress of working as an AB can be extremely taxing and often sickening. Often feels like a catty environment, it makes you wonder what is said behind your back. HR will eagerly meet with you to discuss issues, but rarely do anything to help you improve the situation; it almost seems like they want to pretend the issue does not exist if the employee whose professional character is in question is a profitable asset for the company.

The discounts are great! If one of the good managers/team leads is working, I'll be able to get an extra smoke break or maybe even two. Otherwise, it's not happening. They've been very, very flexible with everyone's hours! Much better than anywhere else I've worked! I really appreciate that the majority of the staff haven't been racist, discriminating, judgemental, etc. They've given work opportunities to all types of people (they're not picky on one's race, disability, age, looks, etc). 👍 They really do seem to be an equal-opportunity employer.

Cons

There has been lots and lots of theft because they have absolutely no security other than their products' tags. Almost rarely do we see a janitor or the manager. It's been very hard to get used to coworkers because they're constantly going through staff! It's not just me that's been bothered by it. Plus, SO many staff, including myself, have always whined and complained about our lack of hours, but the full-time staff get overtime?! Yeah, the amount of hours absolutely sucks when it's not a big "shopping" time! Your best luck for getting your wanted hours is only around Christmas and back-to-school. 🙄
