Pros

The mission of Compassion is great, and lives are being transformed. The pay and benefits are good for a non-profit.

Cons

There are so many people in leadership that should not be! People are promoted because of who they know and not because the are competent. Mangers are not held to the same level of accountability as those beneath them. The 5 Cultural Behaviors that were created to promote a good culture have become very divisive and are used against people in performance reviews. For example, "Careful with my words" means you shouldn't speak up and NEVER question any authority. It's used to silence people in very dangerous ways. When I started (years ago) there was a very different culture. People like coming to work and even spent time outside of work hour together. Our whole department has changed and the office culture is often toxic. Gossip happens regularly because there is no healthy outlet or place for real dialogue. Maybe there are some healthy teams and departments, but I've not seen them. Good luck trying to grow in your career unless you do a lot of butt kissing or know the right people!

Pros

Great people... great mission. Incredible to be a part of such a life-changing ministry to some of the most impoverished children in the world.

Cons

Expectations are very high to do so much with relatively little resources.

Pros

Everyone is attracted to the mission, at least at first. There are some exceptional benefits in terms of work flexibility, and an overall sense of making a meaningful impact in lives.

Cons

Things move slowly, and direction is often unclear to the point that staff lose motivation. The organization is undergoing financial stress with no clear remedy, and there are very limited opportunities for growth. It's frustrating to see pet projects get resources while true organizational needs go unattended. The medical insurance offering has been almost worthless, though Compassion tries with a HSA plus-up.
