Financial integrity issues - Management Compassion International Employee Review

Pros

Many wonderful people with strong skills and values.

Cons

Top executive salaries are very high--providing a luxury lifestyle for more than 20 leaders there--including salaries within the top one percent of all people within the U.S. Salaries are now hidden from public view as most donors would be concerned or even appalled to see this. Money for salaries comes from donations, not sales or profits. Donors and sponsors are typically giving sacrificially to assist extremely poor children. This is a serious ethical lapse on the part of Compassion's board and leadership team.

Global poverty is a complex and pervasive issue that deserves the focus of a highly skilled and experienced workforce that can navigate high levels of managerial complexity and challenge. At Compassion, we believe the best way to honor the generous giving of any supporter is to wisely steward and invest in the resources that are entrusted to us, including our human resources, in order to elevate the effectiveness and efficiency of our efforts to transform the lives of the children in poverty we are called to serve. At the same time, we also believe that each employee’s commitment to our mission should flow out of a deep sense of God-given calling … nothing less. As such, we do not position compensation as a driving motivator to attract staff or generate performance. The reality is that the majority of our top executives experienced significant compensation reductions to join Compassion’s cause. Compensation for the executives charged with guiding our complex, multinational ministry is determined by our independent board of directors, based on recommendations from a third-party compensation consulting firm, with our salary targets being at or below the midpoint of relevant comparables. Furthermore, Compassion’s size provides a level of efficiency and economies of scale that allow us to proportionately invest a smaller percentage of donations in top executive compensation than most smaller organizations.

Pros

Great people... great mission. Incredible to be a part of such a life-changing ministry to some of the most impoverished children in the world.

Cons

Expectations are very high to do so much with relatively little resources.

Pros

Everyone is attracted to the mission, at least at first. There are some exceptional benefits in terms of work flexibility, and an overall sense of making a meaningful impact in lives.

Cons

Things move slowly, and direction is often unclear to the point that staff lose motivation. The organization is undergoing financial stress with no clear remedy, and there are very limited opportunities for growth. It's frustrating to see pet projects get resources while true organizational needs go unattended. The medical insurance offering has been almost worthless, though Compassion tries with a HSA plus-up.
