Unrealistic expectations and insecure leadership - Director Curry College Employee Review

Curry College is not what it seems. At first glance, leadership appears to care about and be invested in its alumni, students, donors and in DEI. They have enough externally facing glossy programs: a DEI office, alumni office, and a recent promise that all graduates will be employed within 6 months of graduating. However, my firsthand experience as a person with a disability and as an alum, paints a different picture. I was never onboarded, expectations and goals were not communicated, there was a consistent lack of clarity, senior leadership failed to manage or lead the team and blamed staff for all problems (my boss complained to me early on about other employees), my boss also self-described as petty and passive aggressive when sharing how she retaliated against above employee, and was also a micromanager. Beyond this, I have a documented disability that I needed time off for to attend appointments. My boss complained about this. Further, when I asked my boss for support or guidance she dodged my questions, refused to help or provide guidance and told me on numerous occasions she felt sorry for me. When goals were at last communicated to me it was too late in the game to do anything (communicated on the last Friday of the month, with results expected on Sunday for the entire month) and were extremely unrealistic. Finally, my boss never supported me or my growth and made multiple comments putting me down and what I brought to the table, and would attempt to highlight how she was better. My boss also did not value work/life balance and often bragged about working thru vacation and on the weekends and pressured staff to do the same. Leadership is insecure and goals are unrealistic or nonexistent. Everything Curry does to “show” that it supports students, alum, DEI and donors (donors = alums) is 100% designed to grow the bottom line (more donations from alums). My position was ultimately eliminated as it was decided it was “no longer needed” with zero advance warning. If you value yourself and your professional growth, I would run from this place as they do not care about or invest in staff. Extremely disappointed in Curry’s blatant lack of regard or support for alum and people with disabilities. While leadership is stressed (it’s a sinking ship after years of mismanagement), that’s no excuse to treat people this way.
