Pros

The pay, benefits, time off, and opportunities for advancement.

Cons

Everything else. Being micromanaged by people who are not qualified. IMPACT evaluations are subjective. DCPS approaches their teachers from a punitive perspective as opposed to growing their teachers. Admin is hit or miss depending on which building you work in but most are unprofessional and inept. Everything is the teacher’s fault with minimal consequences for students. With all of the qualifications and certifications teachers are required to have you constantly are being questioned and have to defend yourself, regardless of your years of experience. The most egregious thing is that math and ela teachers are evaluated based upon students’ performance on the PARCC exam - a test that doesn’t even count towards anything - and students know this so obviously they don’t take it seriously. Students have no tests that serve as graduation requirements. Therefore it’s almost impossible for teachers who teach math or ela to ever earn a highly effective rating regardless of how hard they try.
